Ward 2: The Heart of the City

Ward 2 is home to historic neighborhoods, the downtown, the Tannery Mall, eight parks, and easy access to the Clipper City Rail Trail. We are easily the most “walkable” ward in the City.

Ward 2 went from being “the other side of tracks” 50 years ago to one of the most desirable places to live in Newburyport. This is thanks to residents.

"The Newburyport miracle is not its restored downtown, it is the homeowner restoration of the surrounding neighborhoods which followed." – former City Planning Director Fred Neidhardt.

Ward 2 also encompasses main thoroughfares: High Street. Merrimac Street. Water Street.  State Street…all the way up to the Route 1 traffic circle. Multiple side streets are used as thoroughfares between High Street and Merrimac/Water Street.

Many issues for Ward 2 residents are issues for all residents.  But, being in the hub of growing tourism and traffic creates some unique challenges for Ward 2 residents.  They include parking and traffic safety.
